How We Research Articles

Every Pest Decoded guide starts from primary and official sources whenever they exist: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Pesticide Information Center, state pesticide regulatory agencies, state insurance departments, university cooperative extension programs, official pesticide labels and EPA registration records, and peer-reviewed research. We do not cite competing editorial or content websites as factual authorities, though we may review them as part of understanding how a topic is currently covered.

How We Handle Pricing Information

Pest control pricing is one of the hardest things to report accurately, because it varies by region, provider, property, and treatment scope. Our current approach:

  • We separate general household pest control from specialty services (termites, bed bugs, rodent exclusion, fumigation), because they follow different pricing models.
  • We separate initial-visit charges from ongoing recurring costs, and billing frequency from actual visit frequency.
  • We present ranges rather than a single national average, since a single figure implies more precision than the underlying market data supports.
  • We define, wherever possible, what a price range does and does not include — inspection, treatment method, number of visits, warranty, and common exclusions such as structural repairs or major exclusion work.
  • Pricing pages are reviewed periodically and updated when market pricing shifts materially. Each pricing page states the month and year it was last reviewed.

We are working toward building an original dataset of documented U.S. pest control pricing — collected by provider, state, service scope, and date — to replace general market ranges with a reportable, sourced sample. We will only state a specific sample size or state count on a page once that research has actually been completed and documented; until then, our pages are transparent that the ranges reflect broader current market patterns rather than a completed Pest Decoded dataset.

How We Handle Safety and Health Topics

Pesticide safety, bites, allergic reactions, and structural or health-related claims receive stricter review. We do not diagnose a medical condition from a description or photo, we do not provide dosage or off-label application instructions, and we point readers toward the applicable product label, local regulations, and licensed professionals for anything beyond general consumer information.

How We Handle Authorship and Review

Every article identifies who wrote and researched it. When a specialist reviewer has read and approved a specific article, that person’s name, credentials, and role appear on the page. We do not attribute review to anyone who has not actually reviewed the published version.

Updating This Page

This methodology page describes our current practices and will be updated as our research process — particularly our original pricing dataset — matures.
